“To be a dancer, you can’t have shame. Just get out there and do it!”
Keeping up with choreography is one thing, but doing it while drop spinning a flag is a total different monster. The Leilehua Color Guard team trained hard since mid-December to flaunt their dazzling show at Mililani High School. Their theme this year is ‘The Roaring 20’s!” They will be performing to oldy-goldy remixed versions of popular music from today.
The color guard team implemented the art of dance within their with a 1920’s flapper vibe. Mrs. Chontille Afong designed the staging and choreography. With the help of Jasmine Calaro, a Leilehua color guard alumni, they put together an amazing show. Alongside them are the two future guard captains Carlena Ascensio (11) and Joshua Acebo (10). Together, they create the flag, rifle, cane, and dancing choreography.
Aulani Pang (12), has participated in both marching band and winter guard for four consecutive years, earning her title as team captain. “My experiences in color guard has changed my life entirely.” She explains, “If you knew me before I joined guard, you’d know that I used to be extremely introverted. I could hardly open my mouth to speak and I wouldn’t dance for the life of me. Being in guard has helped me come out of my shell. It has also taught me the importance of teamwork and responsibility. We are one group and we need to help each other with all that we can because if one person falls, we all fall.”
Hard work and dedication are just some of the qualities each performer must have in order to be apart of the team. The twenty plus members of the Leilehua Color Guard team continue to strive together as a family.
