It’s trying to capture even the smallest of the bunch, it’s the scariest legend of college; The Freshman 15. The weight that young adults gain when introduced to a new environment and a schedule that allows them to do whatever they want. Face it, the speedy metabolisms that were once your best friend aren’t what they used to be. Though it is hard to balance a new school, new friends, eating healthy, and exercising, there are ways to to avoid the Freshman 15.
The biggest reason that young adults gain weight freshmen year is because a problem with scheduling, or lack thereof. We have trouble making time for everything or we put off what should really be done. At one point you might get so busy that you don’t have time to make something healthy so when you do get around to it, like on the weekends, you binge. Here’s a piece of advice; eat mini meals. Eating something small every few hours can up or keep up your metabolism this way you don’t have to worry about making it to lunch at a certain time. Make it a date with your friends! This is the time when you want to meet new people and make connections. You’ll see that bonding over food makes tight relationships.
Plan on burning off those calories every now and then as well, you can’t expect to avoid the freshman plague by just exercising your jaw. Exercise is a big part of staying at a healthy weight. That cool chick in your American Literature class might be open to being your workout partner. There is strength in numbers! It’s a great way to get out there and you never know, you might meet that special someone on the track that makes you want to run just one more lap. Even if you jog two miles, that’s eight laps on a standard track, it keeps from the dreaded 15 and your swimsuit ever ready for the summer. The trick is fitting it in your schedule. If you do it night or in the afternoon you don’t have to think about getting up early and you sleep better after good exercise. You can also listen to your textbooks or the lecture from that day. Kills two birds with one stone and defeat that dreaded monster.
